The women’s contest was another fun contest to watch. The girls have really been progressing since the days of the 1st Wicked Wahine at Glendale. Every contest Apryl Woodcock enters, I ask her, “What trick did you learn for this one?” She replied, “Frontside smith,” with a smile. Usually she learns the tricks the day before the contest. Well, I didn’t see her throw any frontside smiths into her run, but she threw in everything else she knows and ended up with the 1st place check. Nicole Zuck ripped apart the bowl and was getting some pretty high backside and indy airs. Along with her usual smooth style, she grabbed 2nd place. You always know when Annie Sullivan is riding because she’s always on top of the coping. She came away with 3rd with 50-50s and backside hip transfers. Mandy Esch busted out on the scene within the past year and has been consistently placing top 5. With tricks like frontside ollie grabs, fs 50-50s in the shallow and backside 50-50s in the deep, she’s been stepping up each contest. Holly Lyons and Heidi Fitzgerald rounded out the top 6 riders.

The masters got pretty hectic at times with Chris Cook rolling in on people who were mid-run. In the end, it was Pat Ngoho’s style and consistency that got him 1st prize. Mike Smith was solid and pulled out all the tricks to land himself in 2nd. The “Reuler” Dave Reul threw out his usual gnar and style to net him the 3rd place finish. Jeff Grosso has been on fire since the Pro-Tec Combi contest and if it weren’t for a couple of falls, he would have definitely placed top 3. Cooksie and Nick “Maddog” Henderson finished 5th and 6th respectively.

The pro contest was sick as usual. Benji Galloway is Mr. Consistency and stood atop the tallest podium for 1st place. Jimmy “The Greek” Marcus held on to take 2nd place. His final run was one of the best runs I’ve ever seen him pull out. Omar Hassan ended up breaking his finger on a fall late in the contest. He kept skating and then got himself to the hospital after the contest was over. Before he broke his finger, he still had enough points to keep him in 3rd place. Josh “Screech” Sandoval was one of the standouts of the night. Ive never seen him ride a pro contest before. He was all over that pool. Backside ollie entries, crailslide reverts, frontside bonelesses. He had a good mix of old and new school tricks that got him 4th place. Taking the 5th spot was Will Powers. He made the transfer from the combi to the skull and everyone went bananas. He had some solid runs and clean lines. Bruno Passos is always a threat in any terrain he rides. It didn’t seem like he got used to the pool enough to be super consistent like he usually is. He ended up in 6th place to round out the standings.
